Sustainable Success Nudge From Your Future Self

💬 “Your state is more powerful than your strategy.”

Because your body is always listening.

Hi Melinda,

One of the ideas I’ve been fascinated by lately comes from decades of scientific research at the HeartMath Institute.

Researchers have been studying something called heart coherence: what happens when we intentionally shift our emotional state by bringing our attention to our heart while experiencing emotions like gratitude, appreciation, compassion, kindness, or love.  (That’s my very simplified explanation, anyway.)

Here’s the part that caught my attention.

This isn’t just about “feeling better.”

Research suggests that these elevated emotional states actually change what’s happening throughout your body.

Your nervous system begins calming.

Stress hormones decrease.

Creativity increases.

Your immune system strengthens.

Your entire body begins receiving a different signal.

As someone who’s spent years teaching Sustainable Success, I smiled when I read this.

Because this is exactly why I’ve always believed self-care isn’t selfish.

It’s strategic.

It’s not that taking a few deep breaths magically solves your problems.

It’s because you are different when you approach your problems from a different physiological state.

That’s why I often say:

Choose your state first.

Then choose your strategy.

So here’s something I’d love for you to try today.

Before your next meeting…

Before opening your inbox…

Before having that difficult conversation…

Pause.

Take three slow breaths.

Bring your attention to your heart. (Place your hand on your chest if you need to.)

Then intentionally experience one elevated emotion.

Gratitude.

Appreciation.

Love.

Compassion.

Stay there for about a minute as you continue deep breathing.

Then begin.

Nothing outside of you may have changed.

But you have.

And that changes everything.

With presence,
Melinda

P.S. I created a 60-Second Heart Coherence Reset exercise to you can print and use. It's a powerful exercise to help you shift force into alignment before your next conversation, decision, meeting, or creative project.
